How to Pick the Best Job for You

Are you a first-time job hunter deciding where to apply? Are you unhappy in your current position and thinking about looking elsewhere? Or, are you fortunate enough to have multiple offers on the table, but you’re not sure which to choose?

In any of these cases, you need to know how to pick the best job for you. Here are four basic strategies to help you make the best career decision.

Design Your Dream Job

The first step in finding what you want is knowing what you want. Brainstorm a list of everything your ideal position includes. Of course, be reasonable. Most of us can’t take a private jet to work and make $1,000,000 per hour. Otherwise, don’t hold back. Include any of the following: Occupation, company, pay, perks, hours, flexibility, culture, corporate values, opportunities for advancement, work environment, management style, co-workers, activity level, work-life balance, commute time and remote options as well as anything else important to you. Next, number your top priorities from one to ten. Consult this list whenever you are facing an important employment decision. Although most people never land THE perfect job, this activity will provide a benchmark to better evaluate your options.

Know How Much You Are Worth

Before jumping into any employment search, you should know how much money you could be making. Even if you land a wonderful position, you are going to be unhappy if you discover you are ridiculously underpaid. Begin by searching for “Salary Range Calculators” online. Remember, incomes vary by occupation, experience level and geographic location.

Try to Get an Inside Look

Unfortunately, if an organization has a bad reputation, they are unlikely to tell you this in the hiring process. Do your homework before you find yourself in an unpleasant situation. You may be able to learn more through your network. Reach out to your connections and see if you can locate someone who works at the company you are interested in. Then, ask them if they would be willing to give you an insider’s perspective. If this doesn’t work, you next best bet is to ask probing questions during the interview such as, “What’s one thing you would change about this company?” Neither of these methods is foolproof, but they can increase the possibility of uncovering the real story.

Keep Your Resume Up to Date

Situations change. Your perfect job may look quite different at 25 than at 55. To avoid getting stuck in a dead-end position, keep your options open. At least once a year, review your resume and your LinkedIn profile. This gives you a chance to re-evaluate your career goals regularly. And, if a wonderful opportunity comes along, you will be ready to go instead of racing around trying to update your application materials.
