Review Your Current Accounts
According to a 2018 survey, 70 percent of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process. So, when it comes to your accounts, think like a hiring manager. If you were checking up on an applicant, what would you consider a red flag? Of course, you should delete any poor-taste posts. However, be careful not to lock everything down. This makes you look like you have something to hide.
- Visit each of your social media channels;
- Change inappropriate screen names and update profile pictures;
- Double-check your settings on private accounts;
- Remove posts containing any of the following:
- Illegal or excessive drug and alcohol use,
- Criminal activity,
- Adult content,
- Discriminatory comments,
- Extreme political views,
- Rants or long-winded arguments,
- Criticisms of past employers,
- Confidential company information,
- References to skipping work.
Run a Search on Yourself
Unfortunately, you can’t have 100% control over everything posted about you online. A photo thoughtlessly tagged by a friend can be just as damaging as something on your own feed. Run a few searches to see what shows up. This is a smart way to find old accounts you may have forgotten about too. Then, as necessary, untag yourself in photos, ask people to delete uncomplimentary posts, or follow specified processes to request the removal of information.
- Search your name on Google, Bing, and Yahoo;
- Look for potential problems;
- Take steps to remove unwanted information.
Create a More Professional Online Presence
Although most people worry about digital dirt, the lack of a social media presence can be problematic too. In fact, recruiters also visit your accounts looking for reasons TO hire you. For example, they may read through your LinkedIn profile and discover qualifications you couldn’t fit on your resume. They may notice how well you communicate when you interact with others online. Or, they may be so impressed by your online portfolio that they decide to call you in for an interview.
- Set up and/or complete your LinkedIn profile;
- Stay active on your public channels;
- Post relevant and useful information;
- Pay attention to spelling and grammar;
- Use your accounts and/or a personal website to highlight your accomplishments.
