Even when you like your job, you still can have one of those days. You’re tired and everything seems SO difficult. But don’t get stuck in a rut. Use these eight tips to stay motivated when work feels exhausting.
Make a Manageable List
Often, we lack motivation because we have too much to do. If your pile of tasks seems overwhelming, begin by identifying what’s MOST important. Take out a piece of paper or your phone and record your top three to five priorities for today. To keep your list from becoming overly ambitious, also estimate the amount of time required to complete each activity.
Follow the 2-Minute Rule
David Allen’s 2-minute rule states, “If it takes less than two minutes, then do it now,” and this strategy applies to larger projects too. Because once you start doing something, it’s easier to keep going. So, rather than sitting around and thinking about how exhausting that big project is going to be, jump in.
Set Your Own Deadlines
Are you putting off a task because it isn’t due until two weeks from now? Tell yourself this assignment is due two days from now instead. Facing a tighter deadline could give you the extra push you need.
Tell Someone Else About Your Deadline
When you tell yourself you’re going to get something done and you don’t, it’s easy to say, “Oh well.” However, when you tell a co-worker you’re going to get something done and you don’t, it’s more embarrassing. Publicly committing to a deadline can help to hold you accountable.
Give Yourself a Pep Talk
Pep talks work wonders in sports movies. So, why not give it a try? Don’t worry if you’re not a natural cheerleader. Simply changing the conversation in your head from, “What if I can’t?” to “What if I can?” could make a noticeable impact.
Sometimes we all need a change of scenery. If you’re feeling uninspired, try looking out a window, moving to a different place for a few hours or rearranging your workspace. Studies suggest that even minor changes can activate our brains and positively influence our mood.
Take a Short Break
If you’re feeling usually worn out, it may be time for a breather. Step away from the daily grind for five to ten minutes. Go for a walk, chat with a co-worker, mediate, or grab a healthy snack. Then, return to work re-energized.
Consider a Change of Pace
You’ve tried all the tricks, and your job continues to be exhausting and de-motivating. If this is the case, you may be ready for something new. A greater challenge? Better hours? Or a less stressful working environment? Depending on your situation, you may decide to either talk to your boss or launch a job search.
