Fall Prevention Tips for Fall 2021

Slips, trips and falls are some of the top causes of work-related accidents. So, what can you do to stay on your feet? Here are five fall prevention tips for the fall of 2021.

Helpful Fall Prevention Tips

Choose the Right Footwear

Whether you prefer boots, shoes or sneakers, you’ll want to make sure your footwear doesn’t trip you up. Shoes with hard, stiff soles tend to have poorer grip, while softer soles with interlocked treads provide better traction. For maximum safety, look for products labeled “slip-resistant” as these are specifically designed for workplace settings. Keep Work Areas Clear

Slippery surfaces, cluttered spaces and misplaced objects may all lead to falls. Pay attention to your surroundings and address any potential problems as soon as possible. If you can’t mop a floor or move something immediately, put up a wet floor sign or caution tape.

Pay Attention to Cords

Multiple power and extension cords quickly can turn into obstacles. Avoid running cords across aisles or walkways. Or, if this isn’t an option, tape cords down or place them under carpets so they don’t become tripping hazards.

Turn on the Lights

Poorly lit spaces also contribute to injuries. It’s easier to trip over or slip on something you can’t see. Before entering a dark room, turn on the lights. If the lighting is inadequate or if there are burned-out bulbs, tell your maintenance department and/or manager.

Use Proper Procedures When Working from Heights

Whereas losing your balance may result in injury, falling from a height greater than six feet can be life-threatening. Therefore, when you’re climbing a portable ladder or working from scaffolding, always follow established safety protocols. Identify the correct tools for the job, inspect equipment in advance and, if necessary, use the appropriate personal fall arrest systems (PFAS). If you feel unsure about a procedure, ask for additional training rather than taking a risk.
