5 Free Resources If You Need to Improve Your Computer Skills

You’d like to improve your computer skills, but you’re on a budget. So, what are your options? Start by investigating these 5 free resources.

Free Resources to Improve Your Computer Skills

  1. Codeacademy

If you’re interested in building your coding skills, Codeacademy has free classes in multiple programming and markup languages. These include C++, HTML, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, SQL and more. Each course provides hands-on experience plus real-time feedback from peers. A Codeacadmy Pro account offers additional hands-on projects and quizzes as well as advisor support. Currently the yearly fee runs $19.99 with discounts available for students.

  2. edX

As a massive open online course (MOOC) provider, edX offers university-level courses developed by schools, nonprofit organizations and corporations. Their computer content covers topics ranging from programming to web design to data analysis. Classes may contain short videos, interactive learning exercises, tutorial videos, online textbooks and/or online forums. Although you can attend most programs for free, you’ll need to pay to receive official certification or college credit.

  3. Grow with Google

The Grow with Google program provides free tools and training to ensure “the opportunities created by technology are available to everyone.” Currently, Google Career Certificates include IT Support, Data Analytics, Project Management, UX Design and Android Development. The classes are 100% online and hosted for free on coursera.

  4. Microsoft Learn

To become an expert in Microsoft products and services, check out Microsoft Learn. Self-paced, free learning paths and modules are available in multiple products ranging from Azure to Teams to Windows Server. Most lessons contain a combination of videos and reading material. In addition, you can attend instructor-led courses and take exams to earn Microsoft certifications. However, there are fees for both upgrades.

  5. udemy

Like coursera and edX, udemy is another MOOC provider. Even though udemy charges for most of their content, they also offer Free Essential Tech Skills. This limited selection of classes includes everything from WordPress to animation to Amazon Web Services. Udemy’s regular IT & Software, Office Productivity and Design catalogs contain thousands more computer courses. Prices vary from $20 to $200 dollars but watch for frequent sales to pay less.
